A little taste of Nicaragua

Essentials
Welcome to Nicaragua—the underdog of Central America that will blow you away with adventure, warm people and stunning landscapes. Forget overcrowded tourist trails; this is the real, unfiltered travel experience.
🛡️ Safety
I felt very safe the whole time. Use common sense: don't flash valuables, avoid dark alleys alone at night and trust your gut. You'll notice how friendly and helpful Nicaraguans are.
☀️ Best time to visit
Dry season from November to April is ideal: sunny skies and good road conditions. Rainy season (May–Oct) has its charm too: lush green landscapes and fewer tourists. Usually it just pours for 1–2 hours in the afternoon.
💰 Currency & 💬 Language
The currency is the Nicaraguan Córdoba (NIO). USD are often accepted in tourist areas but paying in Córdoba is cheaper. ATMs are available in bigger towns—still keep some cash on you. The language is Spanish; a few phrases go a long way.
🛂 Visa & 📱 SIM cards
Many nationalities (incl. EU) get 90 days visa-free. You'll pay around 10 USD for a tourist card on arrival. Passport needs 6 months validity. Mobile data is cheap—Claro and Tigo are the main providers.
Getting around
Traveling Nicaragua is part of the adventure: slow, sometimes chaotic, always memorable.
- Chicken bus: Colorful ex-US school buses. Dirt cheap and always packed—pure local life.
- Shuttles: Tourist vans connecting main hubs. More expensive but faster and easier.
- Taxis & colectivos: Agree the fare first. Shared taxis are good for medium distances.
My game changer: a motorcycle. The freedom to hunt down empty beaches made the trip unforgettable.
